The potential retirement of more than 100 pilots is forcing American Airlines to cancel dozens of flights scheduled for February. A company spokeswoman said the airline has canceled about 76 flights, but the number may increase once the airline knows how many pilots are retiring. The recent decline in the stock market has prompted many pilots to lock in the value of part of their benefits and decide to retire.
The Justice Department has approved Northwest Airlines' plan to buy a minority stake in Midwest Air Group, and the $452 million transaction is expected to close today. "We are pleased that the regulatory review period has concluded," a Northwest spokesman said. "We can now move forward with the closing as scheduled."
The Massachusetts Port Authority in 2002 formed the Center of Excellence to vet products and ideas submitted by inventors and entrepreneurs to improve airport and port security. The center has tested layered voice analysis technology, which the TSA may eventually use when workers interact with airline passengers.
