Investors seem confident the Federal Reserve will lower interest rates again when it meets at the end of January. But that has offered little help for stock markets as investors also wrestle with grim economic reports and a looming earnings season. "It's a directionless market with very little for investors to sink their teeth into," said Jack A. Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank.
