Italy's president is deciding whether to call early elections after the centre-left coalition government headed by Prime Minister Romano Prodi fell following a no-confidence vote. Prodi submitted his resignation shortly thereafter. The political turmoil comes amid a slowing economy and a garbage crisis in Naples that has shown the weakness of the central government. Polls say former prime minister and opposition leader Silvio Berlusconi would comfortably win early elections.
