More European and U.S. retailers are pushing for stricter food-safety regulations for growers and producers in response to increasing consumer concern over food safety and labor conditions. An FMI study conducted last year showed that out of 2,300 consumers, only 66% have total or some confidence in the safety of the food they purchase -- down from the previous year's 82%. "The entire industry has to take what measures we can to restore and demonstrate to consumers we are working to adhere to the highest possible standards," FMI director of communications Bill Greer said.
