A University of Iowa report revealed postpartum depression afflicted 40% of new mothers in the state who were poor, compared to 13% with higher incomes. The report's author said low-income women may face more stress that is compounded by the birth of an infant. A second study in Iowa found black women were more likely to experience postpartum depression than white women, and Hispanics were less likely.
