Standard & Poor's said banks with direct exposure to bond insurers could face significant losses if the credit ratings agency cuts the top ratings of the insurers. Meanwhile, Ambac, FGIC, MBIA and other bond insurers are frantically working to raise capital to avoid downgrades, and banks are discussing a possible rescue of the monolines. S&P did not say which banks are most exposed.
