Many consumers accustomed to shopping at Macy's, The Limited and other national retailers are turning to discount stores such as Marshalls and T.J. Maxx as they seek to stretch their dollars amid a tight economy. Discounters including TJX, Wal-Mart and Ross outperformed higher-priced rivals in January's sales reports.
