The South Bend Chocolate Co. on Wednesday opened a 7,000-square-foot addition to its facility in South Bend, Ind. The new space allows for more visitors, and includes a chocolate store and an indoor children's playground.
Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. announced its plan to makeover its popular stick gums -- including Doublemint, Juicy Fruit, Big Red and Extra -- by changing flavors and packaging. New sleek and slim 15-stick envelopes will make them "more contemporary and give them a better presence on the shelf," the company said.
Proteins derived from potato waste may be used to produce functional ingredients that help lower blood pressure. By isolating the potato proteins, researchers were able to produce hydrolysates that increase activity of ACE-inhibitors to improve blood flow and blood pressure.
A House committee report criticized the FDA for failing to act on sanitation issues in spinach packaging facilities since 2001. The report also said the agency conducted inspections once every 2.4 years despite federal regulations that require at least annual visits for most facilities. An FDA spokeswoman, however, said the country's food supply remains "the safest in the world," adding that the agency has formulated a protection plan for foods and produce that have been linked to illnesses.
