Slushy drinks are a convenience store staple and some retailers are adding new twists to the classic beverages. QuikTrip now serves Freezonies (a proprietary carbonated frozen beverage), smoothies and Rooster Booster (a proprietary energy drink). Iced coffees and cappuccinos also are in demand.
More than two-thirds of manufacturers and suppliers of single-use foodservice packaging in North America expect sales volumes to improve this year over 2007. According to a survey by the Foodservice Packaging Institute, nearly 75% of respondents said they plan to order new equipment, and almost half plan to expand operations.
Ted Farnsworth lost $1 million in his first attempt to enter the beverage business. He's back with a natural combination juice drink called Purple, and the product is taking off. John Sicher, editor of Beverage Digest, says that while he cannot comment on the
prospects of the product, "Purple falls into the burgeoning category of
'functional' beverages aimed at consumers who want more than a drink
that simply tastes good and refreshes."
