Lazard Ltd. is under fire for giving Bear Stearns opinion letters that labeled bids of both $2 and $10 per share as "fair." The letters are commonly used to help shareholders avoid lowball bids, but the discrepancies on JPMorgan Chase's bids for Bear Stearns have led some to question whether the fairness letters are simply rubber stamps on deals.
