Mexican farmers are planting about 9,000 hectares of biotech corn, but most would not admit to using the banned crop, biotech advocate Armando Villareal said. Some farmers oppose the cultivation of biotech corn, fearing its possible effects on native corn varieties, but Villareal said the adoption of biotechnology could help cut U.S. corn imports by 85% or 90%.
