The five fastest-growing U.S. regions by companies and total venture capital dollars are New Mexico, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Los Angeles and the Washington, D.C., region, with growth in the number of startups ranging from 70% to 600% since 1997, according to a report by PricewaterhouseCoopers, the National Venture Capital Association and Thomson Financial. Pittsburgh has focused on medical, biotech and pharmaceutical research. Seattle is developing biotechnology, clean technology and software industries.
