U.S. scientists found that the PKM2 form of the pyruvate kinase enzyme plays a critical role in tumor formation, providing a potential target for cancer therapies. The scientists were able to inhibit tumor growth in mice by depriving cancer cells of PKM2, which enables the cells to use glucose at a faster rate and allows for unrestrained growth. One cancer expert, however, said that further study is needed to determine if the findings apply to human cancers.
