Oxycyte, an artificial blood able to transport four times more oxygen to injured brain tissue than red blood cells, will be the subject of a 200-patient trial at the University of Miami School of Medicine. If the trial is successful, the artificial blood could be used in the battlefield for traumatic brain injuries as soon as next year. There is hope that it can also be used for other conditions, such as cancer and sickle cell anemia.
