A bill that would have allowed convenience stores to sell full-strength beer has died in committee in Colorado. However, a bill that would allow grocery stores to buy liquor licenses from liquor stores is set for a March hearing, and a ballot initiative has been filed that would allow both grocery and liquor stores to sell wine and full-strength beer.
A bill under consideration in Colorado would allow convenience stores to sell full-strength beer, doing away with the current 3.2% alcohol volume limit. Liquor stores used to be closed on Sundays, but that changed in 2008 and convenience store owners say they can't compete with stores selling full-strength beer.
Food Lion's upscale banner Bloom launched a TV campaign that features quirky, upbeat jokes and celebrity cameos in its ads. It also is printing 6 million stickers of "Bloomisms" that employees can put anywhere in the store.
Grocery chains in the Houston area, such as Kroger and H-E-B, will host green promotions to celebrate Earth Day this year. Kroger will offer a plastic bag recycling program, and H-E-B will give away reusable shopping bags.
