Air travel is as safe as it has ever been, and carriers continue to adjust their safety practices long before the FAA announces new directives, write Clifford Winston and Robert Crandall in The Wall Street Journal. They say FAA inspections that forced American Airlines to ground thousands of flights last week were "overly aggressive" and noted that many travelers shifted to highway travel. "In the process, they greatly increased their probability of dying in an accident on their journey," they write.
