John Kelly, as IBM's research director, is trying to balance the company's award-winning history with a rapidly changing environment. He decided to focus his bets on fewer and bigger projects. To increase Big Blue's agility, he invented "collaboratories," research centers that draw on universities, other companies and other countries to tackle industry-specific problems. To take on transportation problems, for example, IBM is looking to Mumbai.
