Some 50 million tree seedlings are planted annually in Nigeria's north, where the desert is spreading, but the majority of the baby trees die within two months, environmental experts said. The number of surviving trees is not enough to make up for the annual deforestation, especially since many of the new ones are chopped down early, said Kabiru Yammama of the National Forest Conservation Council of Nigeria.
