Frederic Lefebvre, a former aide to Nicolas Sarkozy and a member of the French Parliament, amended the president's tough immigration law, giving some illegal workers the opportunity to get work permits. The amendment requires employers to prove the illegal workers are important to France's economy. The move has prompted about 1,000 immigrants to go on strike to force their employers for official papers. "What I wanted is exactly what is happening," Lefebvre said. Immigration, he said, "should be married to the reality of the economy."
