Work is under way on a new air traffic control tower at the Long Island MacArthur Airport. The new $25.2 million facility will replace an aging, 46-year-old tower and will rise 157 feet next to the existing 105-foot tower.
The Northwest Airlines' executive who led the company's bankruptcy restructuring effort will resign in June. "Having successfully completed the restructuring process, and with the impending merger with Delta, I'm excited about the opportunity to pursue business interests outside of the airline industry," said Neal Cohen, who served in various posts since rejoining Northwest in 2005.
The Air Transport Association's summer forecast calls for a marginal decline in passenger traffic. However, planes will be crowded and delays inevitable as airlines reduce flights in response to fuel prices that have reached "absolutely uncharted territory," said ATA President and CEO James May.
One forecaster says Americans will continue to travel internationally despite rising fares and unfavorable exchange rates. "Those that choose to make these trips are reallocating their budgets," said Ken McGill, executive managing director of Global Insight. "Leisure travel has become not only a necessity to many American travelers, it's become almost a divine right."
Labor issues, including the potential for job losses, will be the focus of the latest round of congressional discussions on the proposed merger of Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines. Union reps are concerned the deal would compromise some workers' rights, although airline executives have stated no large-scale layoffs are anticipated.
