Swedish researchers compared 136 women who had rheumatoid arthritis with 544 healthy women and found those who breast-fed their children for one month to a year reduced their risk of arthritis by 25%. The study finds those who breast-fed for more than a year cut their risk by 50%. The authors suggest the protection may come from lasting changes in a mother's immune system induced by breast-feeding.
