At the request of Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., the Government Accountability Office will investigate the Army Corps of Engineers' plans for dredging the Delaware River in order to deepen shipping channels by about five feet. Pennsylvania supports the project, but many environmentalists and politicians in New Jersey argue that dredging will harm water quality and introduce toxins into the food chain. "The G.A.O. will now study these costs to examine whether the Corps is accurately reporting the benefits of the project," Lautenberg said.
