Analysis of data from the Nurses' Health Study shows hormone therapy is linked to a higher risk of stroke regardless of treatment strategy or when treatment begins. The study shows a 40% increased risk with estrogen and 30% with estrogen plus progestin. Researchers say, however, for younger women at a lower absolute risk of stroke, the added risk of the hormones is modest and "might be minimized by lower doses and shorter treatment duration."
