A new study found that reduced activity of the Pdx1 gene during fetal development is associated with increased risk of Type 2 diabetes in adulthood. The gene is involved in the development and activities of pancreatic beta cells that produce insulin. Researchers were able to stabilize the function of the gene in diabetic newborn and adult animals using the drug Byetta, but they have yet to validate the results in humans.
