Growth in the walk-in health-clinic sector appears to be slowing, with some companies that operate clinics in pharmacies, supermarkets and big-box retailers closing. CVS will pull back on expansion plans.
Online discounts and coupons are so easy for consumers to find that some retailers ask that their discount codes be removed from coupon-sharing Web sites. Many retailers offer coupons to select customers, so sharing coupons loses the "importance for the people it was meant for," Shop.org's Ellen Davis said. "Online retailers like online-sharing Web sites because it helps attract people to their brand. What's difficult though is that many online retailers use codes to connect with online customers."
Harris Teeter's first store will open at the end of this month in Columbia, Md., and the company plans another upscale store in South Baltimore in 2010. Baltimore has long shied away from chains, according to reports, and the Harris Teeter store will be the largest in the area.
McDonald's plans a major giveaway to promote the chain's new chicken menu items. Free samples of the "Southern style" chicken biscuits and sandwiches will be offered with the purchase of a medium or large drink on May 15.
