Rep. James Oberstar, D-Minn., sent a letter to the Department of Justice's Antitrust Division saying the merger between Northwest and Delta was "likely to lead to less service to small communities, reduced competition in larger markets and higher fares." Oberstar said additional mergers in the sector would "exacerbate" the problems. "At the end of the process, we may be left with an industry of three network airlines, which will have the ability to undermine the consumer benefits of deregulation," he said.
