More selective colleges are making the SAT optional as they seek to increase socioeconomic diversity. Recent research has indicated performance on the test in and of itself does not accurately predict college success, with performance on the exam influenced by the level of affluence of the student's family; an SAT official said scores on the exam reflect the quality of education afforded each student, not a bias in the test itself.
