About 40% of children, ages 8 months to 2 years, who were part of a Children's Hospital Boston study had less than optimal blood levels of vitamin D, a condition that can lead to broken bones later in life or a weak immune system. The key reasons for the deficiency were not drinking enough fortified milk, failure to take vitamins and being overweight, researchers said.
