Though rail travel is often viewed as an earth-friendly transportation alternative, there are plenty of doubters -- from think tanks to the federal government. Citing trains as "significant contributors to air pollution in many of [the country's] cities and ports," the EPA is requiring up to 21,000 diesel locomotives to cut emissions by 80% to 90%. Electric trains may appear to run cleaner, but if they get their electricity from coal-fired power plants, their carbon footprint is still a significant concern.
