American Airlines said it will give its mechanics more leeway to inspect jetliners in cases when it suspects lightning strikes. The airline's plan is the result of a compromise reached with the FAA and replaces scaled-back maintenance practices put in place last year. American plans to phase in the changes for all of its planes, but they now apply only to its Boeing 767 jetliners used on over-water routes.
