Satellite operators could offer up to 785 Ultra High-Def channels by 2025, a Northern Sky Research report states. 2016 will be a pivotal year for UHD broadcasting, the report states. UHD channels represent only 1% of offerings. "Given the exponential increases we've seen on 4K TV shipments, introducing UHD channels and packages is a key strategy to retain and grow pay TV subscriber bases in an increasingly competitive environment," said NSR analyst Alan Crisp.
Up-and-coming cable-news net MSNBC has announced that it will go high-definition as of June 29. The NBC Universal channel just reached a major milestone of another sort: In the first quarter, it outgunned CNN during prime time among viewers 25 to 54.
The Comcast Media Center has announced the addition of 14 high-definition channels from eight programming groups to the company's HITS service. The new channels include History, Animal Planet, ABC Family, Lifetime Movie and USA.
High-definition DVDs likely will be the U.K.'s fastest-growing entertainment sector now that Blu-ray technology has become the dominant format, according to the 2008 Digital Entertainment Survey. Six out of 10 consumers surveyed said they had been delayed buying a high-def DVD player because there were two formats in the market.
