The Forest Practices Board in Washington state has voted to support an effort between conservationists and the timber industry to work to protect spotted owl habitat on private forestlands. The Seattle Audubon Society had sued the state Department of Natural Resources and Weyerhaeuser Co. in 2006 over tree harvesting in owl habitat, and a settlement in the suit required the new spotted owl group to work on a long-range solution to the issue.
