A new study from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality suggests we do not know the true cost of medical errors because current data may not take into consideration all factors -- including total inpatient costs or readmissions and patient care for 90 days following surgery. One co-author said the higher overall costs for medical errors could mean that adding more nursing staff and other patient safety interventions could be more cost-effective than previously thought.
