The U.S. health care system badly needs to be reformed to curb billions of dollars in unnecessary costs incurred from the overuse of high-tech medical imaging and therapy, particularly physics-based technology, said Arnold Relman, of the Harvard Medical School. Speaking at an annual conference of physicists in medicine, Relman also called for increased involvement by the FDA in regulating the adoption and use of diagnostic and surgical procedures.
