Crutchall Resource Recycling in Grand Rapids, Mich., recycles old roof shingles into asphalt used in roads and parking lots. The shingles are ground up and used to create hot-mix asphalt, but only shingles from residential buildings of four units or less may be used due to asbestos concerns. The high cost of oil used in producing asphalt makes recycling the shingles economical as well as environmentally sound.
