The rate of children born with cleft palates or cleft lips was 11 times higher among female patients taking Topamax, Johnson & Johnson's anti-seizure drug, alone or with other medication, according to a study of 203 pregnancies. For boys, a genital defect was 14 times higher than normal. The U.K. researchers said the findings are similar to those from studies of other epilepsy treatments, but a bigger study is necessary to get more conclusive results.
