Unitaid has backed the creation of an expert panel to look into the potential of a "patent pool" that would keep licenses on prescription drugs, which in turn could be used to develop treatments at lower costs for impoverished countries. The international agency has recommended a starting budget of less than $2 million for the panel and said the pool would initially concentrate on AIDS drugs for infants and adults who have become resistant to first-line therapies.
