Alaska Airlines expects to save about $115 million a year in fuel costs after retiring its last MD-80 this week and transitioning to an all-Boeing fleet. To mark the occasion, Alaska took delivery of a new, specially painted 737-800, an aircraft that burns about 15% less fuel than the MD-80 it replaces. The company has made firm commitments for eight more new planes through the end of the year, bringing its total to 116 Boeing 737s.
