Anemia caused by chronic ailments may actually be an adaptive response and necessary to help the body heal, according to Canadian researchers, who found that treatment by transfusion or erythropoietin drugs could sometimes cause more harm than good. The researchers say that those with mild or moderate anemia may not need any treatment, since anemia, which inhibits the growth of bacteria in the blood, can help fight infection.
