Some elderly people who survived the 1918 flu pandemic still have antibodies that protected them against the virus, according to a U.S. study. Scientists used the antibodies to create a vaccine that allowed mice with the killer flu to survive. Similar techniques may help increase the potency of vaccines against more recent bird flu strains that could become epidemics, the lead researcher said.
