A strengthened yen hit Japanese exporters including Honda Motor, while Cnooc, Woodside Petroleum and other energy-related shares in Asia gained on an overnight increase in the price of crude oil. The Nikkei 225 Average in Tokyo inched down 0.1%, the Topix index dropped 0.3%, the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong gained 0.9% and the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index advanced 1.6%. China's Shanghai Composite rose 0.2%, South Korea's Kospi slid 0.9% and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 edged up 0.1%.
