Ventas, a health care REIT, withstood the brunt of the credit crisis as a result of its April 2007 acquisition of senior housing complexes owned by Sunrise Senior Living REIT. The deal allowed Ventas to raise $1.1 billion, which helped it avoid problems that hit other REITs once the credit crisis got going last August, Chicago Sun-Times columnist David Roeder writes. "The Sunrise deal is typical of how Ventas operates under Chairwoman Debra Cafaro: opportunistically, but with attention to the downside," he said.
