Two fake medical-device suppliers set up by Government Accountability Office investigators in Maryland and Virginia secured CMS authorization to obtain Medicare billing privileges even though they offered vague information and false documents, a GAO report revealed. "This sting operation proves that there are gaps in the system and that scam artists can exploit -- and are exploiting -- those gaps," said Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn. CMS admitted problems regarding its enrollment process but noted that it has set up new standards for the certification of medical suppliers.
