The Hawaii State Center for Nursing, set up by the state in 2003 to find solutions to the nurse shortage through recruitment, retention and research initiatives, is studying how Hawaii fits into the national nursing shortage trend. Experts say the state lacks adequate nursing faculty, has a high drop-out rate for new nurses, and is experiencing increasing stress and burnout among veteran nurses.
