Sprouts Farmers Market is continuing its efforts to help the environment. The chain has started a "Bring Your Own Bag" program that gives customers 5 cents off their total bill for every reused plastic grocery bag.
Retailers from regional chains to supercenters are pushing to get more local produce and other goods into their stores. Hannaford and Wegmans both noted a 20% increase in sales of local goods, and Wal-Mart has committed to spending $400 million on local produce this year.
Minyard Food Stores may have to cut more than 2,300 positions as part the sale of its Carnival Super Market Brand banner and other stores to Grocers Supply Co., according to media reports. The retailer believes many of the employees will be rehired by the stores' new owners.
H.J. Heinz Co. will distribute 200 million self-serve packets featuring trivia questions from the new Trivial Pursuit Totally 80s Edition game. Consumers can log on to Heinz's Web site with answers to win cash prizes or a copy of the game.
