Middle-market retailers that don't attract the luxury audience or match the bargain prices of discounters are battling for traffic in a challenging back-to-school marketplace. Kohl's has rolled out six new apparel lines and a celebrity-studded ad campaign, J.C. Penney has also launched new labels and Dillard's teamed with Sheryl Crow on a new line designed by the singer.
