Military technology used to locate sniper fire in a war zone is now being used to create more secure natural-gas pipelines. The technology uses sound waves traveling through the gas to alert monitors in a remote location when something strikes the pipeline, such as construction equipment. The ThreatScan system, created by General Electric, uses microphones spaced about 10 miles apart, but disturbances can be detected within a few feet by analyzing the sound waves for speed and frequency.
