The first major modernization of New York City's building codes in nearly 40 years was put into place on July 1. The new codes are based on the 2003 International Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, Fuel Gas, and Fire Codes, and they are important because more New York companies are competing in the global market, said Rick Bell, an official at the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter.
