Researchers isolated fetal liver cells from mice and cultured human embryonic stem cells with them and found that many of the cells produced adult forms of hemoglobin and showed indications of red cell maturity after 20 days. The researchers found the resulting cells had the ability to carry oxygen, which might make them useful as an emergency blood supply, and hope their work will be a first step toward learning how to make the system practical for wide-range use.
