Australian shares jumped Monday after a ban on short selling by the country's securities-market regulator. Stocks in China and other Asian markets also advanced on news of the U.S. rescue proposal. The S&P/ASX 200 index in Australia climbed 4.5%, China's Shanghai Composite soared 7.8% and the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong rose 1.6%. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 Average gained 1.4%, South Korea's Kospi edged up 0.3% and New Zealand's NZX 50 index advanced 2.2%.
